H-E-B gives $25K gift to 100 Black Men of West Texas in honor of late partner

To honor a beloved late H-E-B partner, the company made a $25,000 gift this week to the 100 Black Men of West Texas to support the Alyssa Owens scholarship fund and other programming.

Dedicated to improving the quality of life for all residents in Lubbock and West Texas with an emphasis on empowering African Americans, the nonprofit organization named its education scholarship to honor the memory of Alyssa Owens, a 15-year partner who died last year, according to a news release from H-E-B. In her capacity as the public affairs representative for H-E-B in West Texas, Owens was a huge advocate for the nonprofit, regularly supporting their programing and community efforts such as its annual fishing derby.

HEB officials and volunteers with the 100 Black Men of West Texas gathered Thursday at the Lubbock store as HEB presented the Lubbock-based nonprofit with a $25,000 gift this week to support the Alyssa Owens scholarship fund and other programming.

A true champion of H-E-B’s spirit of giving, Owens was deeply dedicated to serving the community, according to H-E-B. She regularly planned and participated in community outreach projects to support nonprofits and schools. She sat on several boards including the West Texas Food Bank in Midland, Lubbock Impact, and March of Dimes.

“We are incredibly proud that Alyssa’s legacy to community support is being honored by this amazing organization,” said Mabrie Jackson, Senior Director of Public Affairs. “Alyssa was a selfless, loving person, and we know she would be unbelievably proud that this scholarship will go toward supporting future leaders who are just as committed to uplifting our communities.”

The scholarship is available to college-bound high school students who excel in the classroom and in service to the community. For more information about the scholarship, visit 100bmwt.org/programs.

“Alyssa made such an impact in our Lubbock community and in the process of that I gained a great friend. Her commitment to community and doing her part to make sure that the whole city of Lubbock was acknowledged goes unmatched. We are amazed and gracious for the generosity H-E-B continues to show our community," Reggie Dial, President of 100 Black Men of West Texas.

A supporter of the 100 Black Men of West Texas, H-E-B has provided programming and monetary support to the nonprofit totaling almost $100,000 since 2020.
