Gus Malzahn Sends Clear Message About The USC Job

UCF head coach Gus Malzahn is one of many coaches who may be a candidate for the vacant USC job. But is it something he’s considering amid his first year at Central Florida?

Appearing on Open Mike this week, Malzahn made it clear that he has no interest in the Trojans coaching job. He said he’s “blessed to be at UCF” and pledged that there are “big things ahead” for his team.

“I’m not interested in the USC job, I’m blessed to be at UCF,” Malzahn said. “We got big things ahead in the future.”

Malzahn joined UCF this past offseason after being fired from Auburn following an eight-year run with the Tigers. He’s 2-0 so far but faces his first Power Five opponent this weekend.

USC fired head coach Clay Helton earlier this week. The coaching search is expected to encompass the entire country and at both the college and NFL levels.

A number of coaches have publicly denied or dismissed the idea of taking the job. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned from the likes of Nick Saban and Bobby Petrino, it’s that you can’t always take a coach’s word for it.

That said, you can probably take Gus Malzahn’s word for it. He has almost no ties to the Pac-12 or west coast football in general. His track record in his final seven years at Auburn doesn’t suggest he’ll be the Trojans’ top candidate either.

Malzahn is 79-38 overall and went 68-35 in eight years at Auburn. He led the Tigers to the SEC title in 2013 and a division crown in 2017.
