Gunman kills 2, wounds 3 in series of shootings, carjackings on Tennessee highway

A gunman killed two people and wounded three others Sunday in a string of shootings and carjackings that wreaked havoc on a Tennessee highway, authorities said.

The violent rampage ended after the suspect, 29-year-old Dangelo Dorsey, crashed a stolen car with a hostage by his side and took his own life before cops could arrest him, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The Missouri resident killed his first victim around 9:30 a.m. while riding in a vehicle on Interstate 24 near Beechgrove in Coffee County, TBI Director David Rausch said in a news conference Sunday.

Dorsey apparently shot two people inside that car, killing one and wounding another, though his motive and their relationship are still under investigation.

After the shooting, traffic in the area immediately stopped and the gunman tried to carjack a nearby driver, shooting her hand in the process and causing widespread panic on the highway, authorities said.

Dorsey also shot a truck driver in the face before carjacking a man and a woman on a Ford Mustang, Rausch said. The suspect told the couple to drive him to their home in the city of Morrison, where he took two additional firearms and swapped vehicles to a Toyota RAV4, according to officials.

The gunman then forced the couple to go with him and, at some point, shot the man inside the car and threw his body out of the vehicle, Rausch told reporters.

Authorities later found the victim’s body near a westbound exit on I-24.

After a frantic investigation that went on for hours, police finally located the SUV around 3:30 p.m. traveling east on the highway. Dorsey then led police on a 100-mph chase before flipping the vehicle minutes later.

The gunman killed himself at the scene, but his hostage was found safe, Rausch said.

TBI agents are still investigating what led to Dorsey’s deadly crime spree and what exactly happened throughout the day.

The man who was killed in the morning was identified Monday as 28-year-old Darcey Johnson. The hostage killed in the afternoon was 23-year-old Phillip Stevens.

“Again, on behalf of the Bureau and our law enforcement partners, I want to extend our deepest sympathies to the innocent lives that have been impacted by today’s set of events,” Rausch said in a prepared statement Sunday.

“We also want to thank drivers on I-24 for their patience. We know today’s work by law enforcement resulted in chaos, delays and inconvenience, but we must work diligently, with a focus on detail, to pursue justice in the memory and honor of those who were directly impacted by this series of crimes.”
