Marvel has released the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ahead of the movie’s release next month and there’s one major difference.

Both volumes of James Gunn's Guardians movies are renowned for featuring iconic songs from the '70s that are all supposed to be from the mixtapes that Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) mother made.

However, Gunn has branched out on the soundtrack for the third instalment, which features tracks from various decades, as Quill found a Microsoft Zune at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

As these comedic-action movies rely heavily on music to set the tone of the scenes, Gunn explained selecting the right pieces for the soundtrack was much harder this time round.

The upcoming MCU epic opens with Radiohead’s acoustic version of 'Creep', striking a completely different tone to 'Come and Get Your Love' in the first movie and sweet ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ in the second.

Gunn told Rolling Stone: "It was very, very difficult. I felt very uncomfortable picking out songs and making sure that this was the right soundtrack.

"Do I move onto just all '80s songs? Do I use all '90s songs? Or do I do what a Zune would actually have – songs from different eras, which is what I ended up doing."

The new DC co-chairman revealed the full tracklist on Twitter, which includes Bruce Springsteen’s 'Badlands', Florence + the Machine’s 'Dog Days Are Over' as well as The Replacements’ 'I Will Dare' and 'I’m Always Chasing Rainbows' by Alice Cooper.

The eclectic sound is another clear message that this movie will be completely different to its predecessors.

Fans are convinced that the finale to this trilogy will see at least one Guardian die, with many theories that Rocket will meet his end as teased by his sombre goodbye in the trailer.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3arrives in cinemas on May 5, 2023.
