GTA 6 Maker’s “James Bond” Game Detailed In New Leak

Rockstar’s cancelled game Agent was a spy thriller with a focus on action set-pieces, taking inspiration from classic James Bond movies, rather than GTA-style open world exploration.

That’s according to a former Rockstar North employee, who spilled the beans on the canned game on his personal blog. Agent had been officially announced as a PlayStation 3 exclusive way back in July 2007, but no more info was ever revealed publicly by Rockstar or publisher Take-Two.

“Internally the project was known as Jimmy. It was a James Bond game and Jimmy is the Scottish version of James,” said ex-employee Obbe Vermeij, in a blog post that has since been nuked by his former employers.

“The game was to be set in the 70s, be more linear than GTA with a number of locations. There was a French Mediterranean city, A Swiss ski resort, Cairo and at the end there would be a big shootout with lasers in space. Classic James Bond,” he added. “The vibe was very cool.”

Set-pieces included a shootout on a ski slope, but after a year of work, the team were rushing to complete the project before they were called by their bosses in New York to work with the rest of Rockstar on Grand Theft Auto 4.

“We really got going on this one and worked on it for over a year. I remember working on a downhill skiing chase scene with guns for instance,” he wrote.

“The game wasn't progressing as well as we'd hoped. It was inevitable that eventually the whole company would have to get behind GTA 4. We tried to cut the game down in an attempt [to] get the bulk of it done before the inevitable call from NY would come. We cut out an entire level (I think Cairo) and maybe even the space section.

“It became clear that Jimmy was going to be too much of a distraction for us and we ditched it. I think it was handed over to another company within R* but never got completed.”

Vermeij has also detailed the work he did on a secret cancelled zombie game for Rockstar.

Rockstar itself is currently all-hands on Grand Theft Auto 6, a game we are expecting the first trailer for in early December.

Vermeij's previous employer has sent a letter to him to insist he pull all the leaked information, but you can’t delete the internet.
