Group Of 5 Conference Reportedly Hopes To “Poach” Remaining Big 12 Programs

With Texas and Oklahoma reportedly set to leave their conference and join the SEC, the fate of the remaining eight Big 12 programs has been called into question.

Just a few days after the initial reports broke, the teams OU and Texas are leaving behind started to scramble for a new conference of their own. Kansas and Iowa State have both reportedly shown interest in joining the Big 10 and TCU, Baylor and Texas Tech have all reportedly made contact with the Pac-12.

If all of these potential moves go through, that would leave just three Big 12 schools remaining: West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Kansas State.

According to recent reports from The Athletic, the AAC “plans to act as an aggressor” and “will try to poach the Big 12’s leftovers, potentially as a group.”

AAC powerhouses Houston and Cincinnati were both denied entry into the Big 12 when the conference was exploring an expansion back in 2016.

With eight teams in their current conference, the AAC is strongly positioned to accept new members from a potentially disbanded Big 12. This conference realignment would be beneficial for both sides, bringing Power Five notoriety to the AAC and the giving the displaced Big 12 schools a home.
