Grizzlies star Ja Morant set to host first youth basketball camp in Memphis

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant will be hosting his inaugural basketball summer camp in Memphis

The Ja Morant Basketball ProCamp will be held June 22 at the Memphis Sports & Events Center. Participants will range from the first- through eighth-graders.

Kids will go through basketball drills and play games throughout the three-hour event. Attendees also will receive an autograph, a team photo and T-shirt from the camp. More information can be found on Morant's camp website.

Morant has been involved with kids in the Memphis community since being drafted by the Grizzlies in 2019, but this will be his first basketball camp. In that time, Morant has helped refurbish basketball courts for kids at local parks and done surprise pop-up visits at camps.

Morant also started his Twelve Time AAU program this year for sixth- and seventh-grade boys and girls. Twelve Time, based in South Carolina, has played weekend games in the Carolinas since March.

When Morant spoke to media after the Grizzlies' season ended in April, he touched on the impact kids from the AAU program have had on him.

"It's been big time," Morant said. "I want to shout out the parents of the kids, also the kids. My AAU team has pretty much brought some life that I needed in my life. Super excited now to actually be able to travel to all the tournaments and be there with them. The goal is just to push the youth and continue to get them better and get them looks."

The Grizzlies star missed most of the 2023-24 season. After returning from a 25-game suspension, Morant played nine games before suffering a labral tear in his right shoulder that required surgery.

Morant still hasn't been cleared for a full return, but he may be by the time his camp rolls around. On Tuesday, Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said Morant will be "pretty close" to full availability when June arrives.
