Grey's Anatomy spoilers follow.

Grey's Anatomy star James Pickens Jr has teased the show's "impactful" season 20 finale.

The landmark series has already seen Grey Sloan Memorial's Chief of Surgery Teddy Altman suffer a life-threatening medical emergency, as well as the new interns landing in trouble after performing an unsupervised surgery on a dying patient.

Pickens Jr's character Dr Richard Webber has faced his own difficulties this season, after he reached for a drink following years of sobriety. The former chief later sought help to keep his recovery on track.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, the actor, who has been on the show since its inception in 2005, explained how the upcoming episodes will compare to previous finales.

"Without giving a whole lot away, it's going to be pretty impactful," he said.

"Obviously we leave off with the interns whose jobs are now on the line after the death of a patient so they've really got to toe the line here and there's obviously Teddy who had the medical emergency.

"I'm now trying to get her back with the help of Winston [Ndugu] and at the same time almost near relapsing and I go back to AA meetings and how that subsequently affects me."

He continued: "Had the one surgery that I had with Teddy and now I back off, I say, 'I don't think I'm ready yet,' so I think that leaves us in a really energising place when we come back to season 21.

"We've got a big wildfire thing that's coming. How that's going to impact us moving with season 21. It's going to be true Grey's Anatomy, that's all I can tell you."

The show's spin-off series Station 19, which is set to conclude after season seven, will also feature a wildfire in its two-part finale — with the firefighters set to crossover with the doctors of Grey Sloan for one final time.

Grey's Anatomy season 20 and Station 19's final season are airing on ABC in the US. Both shows stream on Disney+ in the UK.
