Update: 17 injured in Greyhound bus crash in Tulare County. Number expected to climb, CHP says

A Greyhound bus headed to Fresno left Highway 99 in Tulare County and ended up on its side, injuring multiple passengers Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers could not immediately say what caused the crash, but the bus headed north ended up in a packing house parking lot just off of Highway 99 near Avenue 264 at about 3 a.m., officer Shasta Tollefson said.

The injuries from the crash ranged from minor to moderate, she said. Emergency personnel took groupings of injured people to three area hospitals in Tulare, Visalia and Hanford, CHP said.

The Greyhound originated from Los Angeles and was headed to Fresno with 34 passengers, CHP said. Some of the passengers were headed to Sacramento as well.

Officers had tallied 17 hurt passengers but none of those injuries were considered life-threatening, CHP officer Steve Beal said about 10 a.m. He said that number is expected to climb, but the total had not changed as of about 1:45 p.m.

The bus driver, a 45-year-old man from Beverly Hills, had major injuries, according to a CHP news release. Investigators were still looking into the cause of the crash and working to obtain the bus manifest, CHP said.

A second Greyhound bus arrived to pickup the uninjured passengers and take them to their destination, Beal said.

The bus took out a section of fencing on the east side of the highway, but the crash caused no significant disruption to traffic, he said.
