Greta Thunberg mural vandalized 24 hours after unveiling

A mural celebrating teen activist Greta Thunberg was defaced with vile language only 24 hours after it appeared on a wall in Dublin, Ireland.

The Irish Post reported Wednesday that the artwork painted by Irish artist Emmalene Blake was vandalized with what appears to be spray paint referring to the Thunberg as a sl-t and linking her to billionaire philanthropist George Soros — a frequent target of right-wing conspiracy theorists.

Internet trolls had reportedly been calling for attacks on the mural since its debut on Chancerry Street. Green Party politician Ciaran Cuffe posted a photo of the vandalized portrait, which included a giant X over the 18-year-old environmental advocate’s face.

“Sad to see this amazing mural of Greta Thunberg by @emmaleneblake vandalised so quickly,” he captioned the image. “Hopefully it can be repainted.”

Blake talked about her painting to RTE news before it was introduced to the public Tuesday.

“I actually designed this piece about a year and a half ago,” the artist said. “But I just never got around to painting it back then, so I thought now is the perfect time.”

The mural was inspired by a speech Thunberg had given prior to the start of the pandemic dealing with climate change, deforestation and other environmental concerns. An animated word bubble coming from the mouth of the Thunberg painting says, “The world is waking up and change is coming.”

Blake has also credited with painted murals of Americans Cardi B and Bernie Sanders as well as Irish pop-star Sinead O’Connor.
