Greg Cote Show podcast: Fred Segal on how Greg’s trade-Marino column inspired ‘Freezing Cold Takes’

Hachette Book Group

Way back in 1993 Greg Cote wrote one of the most famous, most infamous, most remembered columns of his Miami Herald career -- forever to be known as “the trade Marino” column.

Fred Segal, then 11 and a huge Dolphins fan living in Miami-Dade, read that column ... and never forgot it.

In 2015, Segal, then fully grown and an attorney in Broward, launched a Twitter site, Freezing Cold Takes (@OldTakesExposed). It blew up into a national phenomenon. It now has almost 600,000 followers and Fred has a new book, “Freezing Cold Takes: NFL,” out August 9 but available now for pre-order.

And guess what gets an entire chapter in the book? You guessed it. Our “trade Marino” column that was the inspiration for what would become Segal’s cottage industry.

Fred joins us on the latest Greg Cote Show podcast in a fun conversation about that infamous column, the Freezing Cold Takes phenomenon and his new book.

This is our 32nd episode of 2022 and 123rd overall and we welcome you back as always.

On the latest menu in addition to the Freezing Cold Takes king Segal:

Joe Biden phones into the show and leaves a voicemail for the first time in ages.

Speaking of voicemail, the guys make merciless fun of Greg’s “Hey, everybody” message.

Greg rails against a Ted Lasso ripoff show, and those Diet Dr. Pepper ads with the fake Prince.

Greg tells another Dad joke. (Just one, though, he promises).

A debut ad from a brand new sponsor, Little Danny Urinal Cakes.

Plus Dick Vitale’s ESPYs speech, Greg’s infatuation with soccer’s women’s Euros, and the heyday of U.S. airline hijackings.
