Greenway bridge damaged in wreck

Dec. 1—HIGH POINT — A section of the High Point Greenway remains closed indefinitely after it was damaged in a hit-and-run crash.

A 2016 Chevrolet Malibu ran off Deep River Road and struck a wooden pedestrian bridge near Gordon Road around 3:30 a.m. on Nov. 24, according to High Point Police Department reports.

This segment of the greenway, which is about 150 feet long, just south of University Park, is closed until repairs can be made, said city Parks and Recreation Director Lee Tillery.

It's unclear when that will be, he said Thursday.

The greenway remains open on either side of the closure, but there is no crosswalk or sidewalk connection that allows pedestrians to bypass the damaged bridge.

"We wouldn't recommend anybody trying to go a different way through there — especially on that road — aside from the greenway," Tillery said.

According to police reports, the car was going north on Deep River Road, ran off the road twice and hit two street signs before striking the bridge, causing an estimated $8,000 worth of damage.

Traffic investigators estimated the car was traveling 50 mph at impact. The posted speed limit on this stretch of Deep River Road is 35 mph.

A witness told police that a woman got out of the car and fled the scene. Police said hit-and-run warrants had been drawn on a suspect.
