GreenPal, like Uber for mowing the lawn, is now available in Springfield

What if you could use an app like Uber to find someone to mow your lawn? According to lawn-care service company GreenPal, that service is now available in Springfield. As homeowners tackle mowing and weed-whacking season in the Queen City this summer, GreenPal says it's the only way to do it this year. GreenPal, which is based in Nashville, was co-founded by Gene Caballero.

"After successfully launching in 250 other markets, we are excited to help homeowners in Springfield find reliable, safe, and local lawn care,” Caballero said.

GreenPal's technology allows local, pre-screened vendors to competitively bid on lawns to ensure homeowners get the best price for their lawn care needs. Homeowners can select who they want to work with based on the vendor's ratings, reviews, and price. Customers can list their lawns with a date of service and their lawn care needs for free, ensuring they get what they pay for. Vendors then bid on these properties based on aerial and street view photos and the details provided.

"It's also free for them to bid," Caballero said. "GreenPal doesn't have any influence on the pricing. All the pricing is done by local professionals in the area. We just kind of help connect the two and make it easier for them to find each other."

Once a vendor has completed the service, the lawn care professional will submit a time-stamped photo of the completed work. Homeowners then pay in the app and are able to set up additional appointments. Homeowners can even order "contactless" lawn care for the same or next day. This is especially helpful for customers over 60, who make up 30% of GreenPal's customer base.

According to Caballero, vendors can be businesses or individuals. It might be one person with a truck, or it might be a lawn care service with a few crews out cutting lawns. Whomever it is, the vendor is not randomly selected like on Uber. The customer chooses their own lawn care provider who best suits their needs. Those needs aren't limited to lawn care; you can also book other landscaping services such as mulching, weed removal, and shrub pruning.

"We even had a fence put in on GreenPal. Now that's kind of a one-off, but basically anything that needs to be done landscaping-wise can be done through GreenPal," Caballero said.

After launching in Kansas City, St. Louis, and other larger markets, Caballero has found that interest is usually slow at first, trickling in. He said this was not the case for Springfield, where many vendors and customers have already signed up or listed their lawns.

"We knew it was a market that we needed to launch in 2024," Caballero said.
