For the second time since the start of training camp last week, a young player on the Green Bay Packers has announced his retirement from the NFL.

According to an announcement from team reporter Wes Hodkiewicz, rookie wide receiver Bailey Gaither has decided to retire. He joins last year’s sixth-round pick Simon Stepaniak as the second Packers play to hang it up for good in the last few days.

Gaither signed with Green Bay this spring after going undrafted out of San Jose State. He spent six years with the Spartans after redshirting during his freshman season and then missing the entire 2018 campaign with a torn Achilles. Gaither played in 44 games at San Jose State during his collegiate career and hauling in a total of 135 receptions for 2,227 yards and 18 touchdowns.

The Spartans wide receiver left school as second in program history in touchdown receptions, fourth in receiving yards and 11th in receptions.

To fill Gaither’s spot on the roster, the Packers announced that they signed former Northern Illinois tight end Daniel Crawford. He was in attendance at practice on Tuesday.

Crawford spent five years at Northern Illinois after missing all of the 2018 season with a knee injury. He played in 42 games for the Huskies, racking up 65 receptions for 691 yards and three touchdowns.

Even with Gaither’s departure, the Packers still find themselves in good shape at receiver. Davante Adams continues to lead the way as Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, Devin Funchess, rookie Amari Rodgers and recent addition Randall Cobb provide Aaron Rodgers with other strong options in the passing game.
