What’s so great about Wawa? 15 things to know about the cult favorite coming to Kentucky

Wawa is coming to Kentucky and people are excited. Why? What’s so great about this convenience store/gas station?

The Pennsylvania-based gas station and convenience store chain, which is on a growth spurt, announced on Wednesday that they plan on moving into Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana after Tennessee, sometime after 2025. Next year, the chain is expected to announced more specifics on timing and numbers of stores.

The first Tennessee Wawa is expected to open in Nashville sometime in 2025, with perhaps 40 planned for the market.

This comes after Texas-based Buc-ee’s opened its first Kentucky location in 2022 in Richmond, with plans to open more stores across Kentucky.

So what distinguishes Wawa from its competitors?

Lots of coffee, breakfast options

People rave about the coffee. Really. Fresh, hot and ready for you to fix the way you like it. And cheap.

Which leaves you a little extra for the Sizzli breakfast sandwiches. You can get bagels or croissants with egg and cheese, bacon, sausage, ham and more options.

Wawa offers nearly endless variations on its Sizzli breakfast sandwiches. There are even versions with pancakes or waffles for the “bread.”

Hoagies and more

If you’re looking for lunch, check out the hoagies and sandwiches. You can go with a classic 10-inch hoagie, a 6-inch “shorti” hoagie or a 4-inch junior, in varieties like meatball, cheesesteak, hot turkey in gravy or 11 cold varieties.

Or if you’re looking for something else, Wawa will fix custom bowls of mac and cheese. Or paninis, or quesadillas. Or smoothies or milkshakes.

The stores also are known for excellent customer service, cheap gas, free ATMs and clean bathrooms.

And they’re always open: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The goose and the secret menu

Why is it called “Wawa”? The name is based on a Native American word that means Canada goose, which is why there is a goose in the logo.

Speaking of the goose, if you touch the goose icon on one of the ordering touch screens, a secret menu will pop up with specialties like the Birthday Milkshake.
