Great, Piers Morgan Just Entered the ‘Baby Reindeer’ Saga
If there’s one thing we can count on, it’s Piers Morgan inserting himself into drama that has absolutely nothing to do with him. This time, he’s stepped into the Baby Reindeer hellfire. In case you missed it, Baby Reindeer is a new Netflix series starring Richard Gadd as a fictionalized version of himself. On the show, he plays Donny, a comedian who is harassed by a relentless stalker. The show, which is inspired by Gadd’s actual experiences, explores the trauma and psychological torture that come with someone tracking your every move.
In an interview with Variety, Gadd confirmed the series is based on true events. “It’s all emotionally 100 percent true,” he said. “It’s all borrowed from instances that happened to me and real people that I met.” One of those real people is the alleged stalker, who is named Martha on the series. After the show aired, Internet sleuths tracked down “the real Martha”: Fiona Harvey. This is where Morgan comes in—he interviewed her on his show, Piers Morgan Uncensored.
During their conversation, Harvey denied stalking Gadd and said she plans to take legal action against him and Netflix. Harvey also said she hadn’t watched the show but confirmed that she did meet Gadd while he was working as a bartender (as depicted on Baby Reindeer) and said she saw some similarities between herself and Martha. Interesting. She claimed the forty thousand emails and the sexual assault didn’t happen, though. “I don’t think I sent him anything,” she said. “There may have been a couple of emails, jokey banter, but that’s it.”
It gets weirder. Harvey spent an unusually long time trying to explain away minor details in her interview. At one point, she insisted that she paid for her drink when she and Gadd first met. Later, when Morgan aired a clip of Gadd promoting Baby Reindeer, Harvey fixated on his voice, claiming that he didn’t sound Scottish. She also said Gadd is “psychotic” and “obsessed” with her, telling Morgan she had no choice but to clear her name. “The Internet sleuths tracked me down and hounded me and gave me death threats. So it wasn’t really a choice.”
Hopefully, this is the last we’ll hear about Baby Reindeer for a while. When the show found an immense level of popularity, Gadd asked fans to lay off. “People I love, have worked with, and admire…are unfairly getting caught up in speculation,” he wrote. “Please don’t speculate on who any of the real-life people could be. That’s not the point of the show.” Unfortunately, it’s too late for that—but even Harvey wants a break from the drama. When Morgan asked if she had any words for Gadd, she replied, “Leave me alone, please. Get a life. Get a proper job.”
