Do you make great Irish soda bread? Enter Ross Brewing Co.'s baking contest

Are you known for your Irish soda bread?

Enter your recipe in Ross Brewing Company's upcoming Irish soda bread contest, taking place at noon Sunday, March 17, at the brewery in the Port Monmouth section of Middletown.

The competition is part of Ross' St. Patrick's Day celebration, also featuring bagpipers; a new beer called Sully's Irish Stout; and corned beef and cabbage (and other Irish dishes) from Nip N Tuck in Long Branch,

"It's something we have wanted to do right from the beginning of Ross Brewing: be a hub for the community to gather and celebrate, discuss, inspire and otherwise interact," said owner John Ross Cocozza. "The "town square" of today's modern times, if you will ... not just be a brewery. And one thing we've learned about this community is they love to make food and share it. So we've done a patriotic dessert contest, an apple pie-baking contest, a chili-making contest, and now this one."

Soda bread entries should be traditional recipes made with flour, baking, soda, salt and buttermilk. Add-ins such as raisins and nuts are allowed. The bread must be prepared and baked off-site, and bakers should provide butter or similar spread on the side.

The top three winners will be decided based on taste, presentation and texture. Cocozza could not disclose the contest's judges but said prior judging has been done by Middletown Mayor Tony Perry, Middletown Police Chief Craig Weber, Chef David Burke, Jen Lampert of Half Moon in Keansburg, and Mike Zapcic of Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Red Bank, among others.
