Great Dane Devours Entire Birthday Cake in Hilarious Act of Impatience

Unless you're one of those people who thrive as the center of attention, you probably know how awkward it is to be sung 'Happy Birthday.' It's a tradition that dates back into the 19th century, but it's never become any less uncomfortable for the guest of honor. People combat this awkwardness in a few different ways--I laugh a little, sing along, and stare at the cake if needed--but one impatient Great Dane invented the best diversion of all.

On March 15, dog parent Angela posted the most hilarious video of the birthday girl (her massive dog, appropriately named Kilo) diving mouth-first into her birthday cake just seconds after it was set down. She pays no mind to the cake's size or the lit birthday candle on top as she demolishes the cake, and you can bet people are talking about it.

OMG! I audibly gasped the first time I watched this video, but now that I've seen it a few times, I can't help but giggle. My food-motivated dog reacted the exact same way when we tried to sing him the birthday song, so I'm not that surprised. Why would they want to sit still for a dumb song when a delicious dog treat is right there?

And for anyone who's worried--Kilo is just fine! I'm willing to bet money that everyone in the room with her was just as worried about her burning her mouth, but she chomped the top of the cake off so fast that she probably didn't even notice. Plus, mouths are wet, so there was plenty of moisture to extinguish the flame if the Great Dane's quick chomp didn't do the trick.

If anything, the thing to worry about would be bowel obstruction from eating the candle, but this hungry dog has been perfectly fine since her birthday. Her parents have been keeping an eye on her regardless, though everyone's concerns are fading day by day.

How to Stop a Dog From Eating Fast

Surprises like this can happen to even the most experienced dog owner, but with a little preparation and training, dogs can learn to keep their cool.

Sometimes, it's as simple as changing how you serve the dog's food. Having this cake on the table made it easy for Kilo to devour, for example, but she may have had to go bite by bite if it were in a dish that stopped her from opening her mouth wide enough to chomp the entire thing. Dog owners can also opt for breaking up treats into smaller sizes, or even putting bite-sized food into a slow feeding dish. There are plenty of options out there for eager eaters just like Kilo!
