Gray-Keenan basketball game called early after player’s medical emergency

The anticipated Gray Collegiate and Keenan boys basketball game was called late in the fourth quarter after a scary moment involving Mychael Mitchell.

Mitchell, a Gray Collegiate senior, appeared to take an elbow to the head with 15.9 seconds left in Tuesday’s game. After landing on the floor, his body began to convulse.

Athletic trainers rushed to his aide on the floor and helped Mitchell regain consciousness.

Lexington County fire and safety workers arrived on the scene. Mitchell was sitting in a chair and was then helped on a stretcher and taken to a nearby hospital.

The game was called with Keenan ahead 55-50. It’s unlikely the game will be finished, Gray Collegiate coach Dion Bethea said.

The two teams play again Friday at Keenan in WACH Fox’s Game of the Week.

“Just seeing him like that, it was hard for me because he stopped breathing. That was scary,” Bethea said. “I thought the athletic trainers responded very well and really got out there and got him back.”

Both Gray and Keenan players and coaches were visibly shaken by the moment. Both teams were seen praying as Mitchell was being treated.

“I started praying to the Lord because I saw he wasn’t moving,” Keenan coach Zach Norris said. “My prayers go out to the Gray team. Our kids took it hard. Both teams are going to try to regroup.

“This was one of the toughest games this year. I am sad it ended like this but I am glad their player is OK.”

Gray Collegiate (14-7) entered the game ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, with Keenan (11-7) at No. 3. They are two of the favorites to make it the state championship in March.

In the girls matchup, South Carolina signee MiLaysia Fulwiley scored 24 points to help top-ranked Keenan past No. 2 Gray Collegiate, 57-48. Keenan outscored Gray, 14-3, over the final five minutes of the game.
