What is a Grandma McFlurry at McDonald's? Here's what to know about new ice cream flavor.

Move over M&M and Oreo McFlurry ― Grandma's cooking is coming through.

On May 21, McDonald's released the limited-edition Grandma McFlurry, from straight out of your nana's kitchen (well, sort of). The ice cream flavor is now available to order from the fast food restaurant's menu.

Many customers have been wondering about the new McFlurry family member. McDonald's only gave the slightest hint of what flavors the ice cream will be. Before launch day, some fans guessed that the McFlurry will taste like butter pecan, butterscotch, or strawberry.

Now that launch day has arrived, what exactly is the Grandma McFlurry? What is her secret? And how long will the flavor be available?

What is in a Grandma McFlurry?

Before its release, McDonald's vaguely described the sweet treat as something grandma would "hide in her purse," made with "delicious syrup" and hard candy pieces sprinkled throughout.

On launch day, fans got their first taste of the McFlurry, revealing its mystery.

The Grandma McFlurry is concocted of three main ingredients: butterscotch flavored crumbles, butterscotch flavored syrup, and reduced-fat vanilla ice cream.

Reviews for the ice cream on social media have been generally favorable, but the final verdict will depend on your love of butterscotch. The ice cream flavor was also described as sickeningly sweet, so you will need a strong sweet tooth to scoop to the bottom of that ice cream cup.

What inspired the Grandma McFlurry?

The Grandma McFlurry was created to bring back feelings of childhood nostalgia and good times at Grandma's house. At least, that is what McDonald's was aiming to achieve when working on the flavor. Whether you find yourself lovin' or not lovin' it, one thing is for certain: the Grandma McFlurry was made with love.

“Grandmas have always held a special place in our hearts, and today they’re having a major moment influencing culture – inspiring trends in fashion, decor and now, even food with our newest McFlurry,” said Tariq Hassan, chief marketing and customer experience officer at McDonald’s. “The Grandma McFlurry tastes like a trip down memory lane, and we’re excited to give our fans that experience while honoring the grandma-figure in all our lives.”
