Goshen's Allen Li beats Minisink's Ethan Rodriguez for Section 9 boys tennis championship

GOSHEN - The new generation of standouts in boys tennis were on full display at the Section 9 tournament this week at MatchPoint Tennis club.

In an all-freshman final, Allen Yi of Goshen upended Ethan Rodriguez of Minisink Valley 6-4, 6-2 – it was a reversal of last week’s OCIAA tournament championship final.

T.J. Mancuso of Monroe-Woodbury topped Eli Loewen of Kingston, 6-4, 6-1, in the third-place match, sending Mancuso to the upcoming state tournament in Queens.

The sectional doubles title goes to Newburgh juniors Henry Goings-Perrot and Alex Cestaro – the first-year pair topped Cornwall’s Ryan Geller and Adam Greher, 6-1, 6-0 in the championship.

The doubles consolation and state tourney berth went to Washingtonville’s Matt Medina and Tyer Yhun, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 over Monroe-Woodbury's Lincoln McConnell and Yuvraj Chandyek.

In the singles semifinals, Yi beat Loewen, 6-1, 6-4, and Rodriguez needed nearly 2 ½ hours to beat Mancuso, 4-6, 64, 6-4.

In the doubles semis, Goings-Perrot and Cestaro beat McConnell and Chandyek, 6-1, 6-1, and Geller and Greher beat Medina and Yhun, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
