Good Trouble Stars React to Cancellation News: ‘This Has Been One of the Biggest Joys of My Life’

Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez, who have played on-screen sisters Callie and Mariana Foster since The Fosters premiered in 2013 (on ABC Family!), have shared their reactions to the news that series’ spinoff Good Trouble will end after the conclusion of Season 5.

“10 years of making TV with my best friend,” Mitchell wrote in an Instagram story Friday night, beneath a photo of the co-stars. “Could not be more proud of you [Cierra].”

Both Mitchell and Ramirez also serve as executive producers on the series.

Along with Good Trouble, Freeform on Friday also cancelled Cruel Summer, officially ending its final two scripted series. (The back half of grown-ish‘s own final season will air in 2024.)

“So many emotions right now after hearing that our beloved show, Good Trouble, has come to an end,” Ramirez wrote in her own heartfelt post on Instagram. “The greatest one of all, being gratitude.”

She credited both Good Trouble and The Fosters for shaping her into the person she is today and called her character Mariana her “favorite piece of work.”

“It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to play a character on a show for 10+ years that has helped get important conversations started, pushed for transformative change in the world, & has inspired people to be themselves & find a place of comfort,” she wrote.

Ramirez continued, addressing the character directly: “I can’t tell if there’s a part of me in you, or if you ARE me at this point, but nonetheless I will alwaysssss carry your sass, resilience & willingness to give to others. Oh, & you best believe I’ll never let someone tell me I can’t do something l’ve set my mind to.”

Ramirez thanked every member of the Good Trouble team, from executive producers to her fellow cast members. She thanked the show’s writers for “pouring literal blood, sweat & tears into our show” and called the crew the “TRUE stars of the series.”

But the actor ended her note by thanking fans. “One of my most favorite things about this experience is getting to meet so many beautiful people who related to this show, or saw themselves in it,” she wrote. “It made it ALL the more worth it. This has been one of the biggest joys of my life, & I owe it ALL to you, your love, dedication & time that you’ve given us.”

Good Trouble will conclude with the back half of its fifth season, which premieres Tuesday, Jan. 2. The upcoming episodes will welcome back Mitchell and Beau Mirchoff as Callie’s fiancé Jamie (get an exclusive first look here) and mark Ramirez’s directorial debut. The current cast also includes Zuri Adele, Sherry Cola, Bryan Craig, Emma Hunton, Tommy Martinez, Josh Pence and Booboo Stewart.
