Good news for gamers: Pace to introduce video game development degree program

Love video games? Make it your career.

Pace University will launch a video game development program in the fall of 2024.

The new bachelor's degree will aim to produce students with a well-rounded education in game development, including computer science, art, design, and narrative, according to a news release Thursday.

"Pace students will have the opportunity to either create the next mobile sensation or pursue roles at esteemed companies like Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony, among others," the release said. "The technical skills and storytelling abilities acquired through the B.S. in Game Development will prove invaluable as students embark on their professional journey."

The program will emphasize hands-on learning, and students will have the chance to create games in different genres. An objective of the program is for students to publish a game in an app store.

A B.S. in game development could lead to several different jobs, the release said: gameplay programmer, virtual reality software developer, mobile developer, AI programmer, level designer, and game designer.

"As of 2020, the game industry is larger than the film and sports industry combined," Carmine Guida, professor of computer science and director of the new program, said in the release. "Students who love technology and want to use it for creative pursuits thrive in this new major.”

Pace University has campuses in New York City and Pleasantville, and its law school is in White Plains.
