Golf: Here's who qualified for State Boys and Girls championships via the North sectionals

JEFFERSON – Madison qualified for next week’s State Boys Golf Championship by the slimmest of margins.

Madison won a three-way match of cards with Montville and Bernards because the fifth player, whose score rarely counts in New Jersey golf, counted as the tiebreaker at Monday’s North 1 and 2, Group 2 sectional tournament. The Dodgers had the best fifth scorer at Berkshire Valley Golf Course.

“We’ve had a lot of depth all year,” said Madison coach Matt Millichap, whose team advances to Monday’s NJSIAA Championship at Raritan Valley GC in Bridgewater. “Even our sixth player was right there with the fifth player, and a lot of balance there.”

While Mendham won the overall title with a shoot-five, count-four of 312, Madison, Montville and Bernards tied for second at 317. The Dodgers fifth player carded 87 and that was one shot better than Montville and 12 better than Bernards.

Madison junior Alex Patel was North 1 medalist with 73. Senior teammate Nathan Tallinder shot 78, sophomore Blake Steele 81, senior Quinn Reagan 85, and the tiebreaker was won with sophomore Teo Bengsten’s 87.

Mendham won the overall title, as well as North 2, with four juniors carding 82 or better. Liam Brandt shot 75, Seth Harris 77, Anders Farley 78 and Ian Aitkenhead 82.

“It’s been a goal of the team to go to the TOC as a team for the past two years, so they’ve been working hard to meet that goal,” Minutemen coach Shira Brown said. “So it’s rewarding to see that hard work pay off today.”
