Golf: Here's what happened at Tuesday's NJSIAA State Girls Championship; with full results
BRIDGEWATER – Holy Angels has earned the distinction of “Back-to-Back Champion,” and the next description could be “Dynasty.”
The Angels repeated as team titlist by double-digit strokes at the NJSIAA Girls Golf Championship on Tuesday at Raritan Valley Country Club.
Holy Angels carded a shoot-five, count-four score of 305 that was 13 strokes better than another powerhouse, Wardlaw Hartridge, which won back-to-back titles the previous two seasons. Bergen Tech, last year’s runner-up, was third with 320.
“It was all about trust today,” sophomore Olivia Lee said after leading Holy Angels with a 1-over-par 73 that placed her eighth as an individual. “We had to trust each other as a team, trust ourselves.”
Millburn sophomore Ysabel Liu won the individual title with 68. Sophomores owned the top of the leaderboard, with Pingry’s Rayee Feng runner-up with 70 and Bergen Tech’s Olivia Pak third with 71.
“Trust” was the key word for Holy Angels, because the Bergen County school was without the reigning North Jersey Player of the Year, junior Angelina Kim, a major Division I recruit with pro aspirations who was competing in a tournament in Texas.
“I was a little worried not having Angelina here,” said Holy Angels’ longtime coach, Patrick Dunne, “but they played their hearts out like they did all year.”
A senior-less lineup did not skip a beat for Holy Angels. In addition to Lee’s 73, junior Inha Jun shot 74 to tie for 10th, junior Sharanya Agarwal was 16th with 76, and freshman Eleanor Lim had 82.
For Holy Angels, a lot can happen between now and next year. There’s teen stuff like getting a driver’s license, applying to colleges, maybe even a little senioritis. They have won state championships by 14 and 13 strokes, so another title is within reach.
“Everyone on this team is so driven,” Lee said. “And I think everyone is willing to put in the work, to three-peat, hopefully.”
“Hopefully we can give it one more shot next year, see what happens,” Dunne said. “Because we’re successful, people are coming. They came, they want to be part of the program, which is great.”
Liu’s individual title came one day after she played 36 holes in a qualifier for the U.S. Women’s Open. While playing 36 holes left her a tad fatigued and reduced her driving distance, Monday’s second round was well below par and gave her confidence entering Tuesday.
Liu enjoyed a huge boost at Raritan Valley with an eagle on the second hole, a 310-yard par-4. She holed out from 70 yards by taking a “half swing” with a 54-degree wedge.
“I just hung in there and stayed patient and did the most I could, which was put a good stroke on it or a good swing on it,” Liu said.
