Golf betting: United States enters Presidents Cup as huge favorite

It’ll be a stunner if the United States doesn’t win the Presidents Cup.

The U.S. is a staggering -700 at BetMGM to win the four-day tournament over the International Team beginning on Thursday at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. The United States is such a big favorite that you’ll just win $1.43 if you bet $10 on a U.S. victory.

The International Team is at +650 to win while a tie is at +1600. The Internationals are such long shots to win thanks to LIV Golf. The upstart Saudi-funded golf tour has signed many of the team’s top players like Cam Smith, Joaquin Niemann and Abraham Ancer. As a refresher, since the Ryder Cup is the United States vs. Europe, the Presidents Cup is the U.S. vs. the rest of the world. The International team includes Canadians Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith.

The U.S. wasn’t immune to LIV Golf defections either. Players like Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka were on the 2021 Ryder Cup team but aren’t on the Presidents Cup team because they went to LIV. The PGA Tour runs the Presidents Cup and any golfer who signed with LIV is ineligible to compete in the event just like he’s ineligible to compete on the PGA Tour.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to be the Americans’ top point scorer. He’s at +500 to win while Patrick Cantlay is at +550 and Xander Schauffele is at +600 ahead of Justin Thomas at +700. Sungjae Im is the favorite to be the top scorer for the International team at +500 while Hideki Matsuyama is at +550 and both Corey Conners and Adam Scott are at +650.

There’s some value to be had if you think an International team member will be the top overall points scorer. Scheffler is the favorite at +700 to score the most points on either team while Im is at +1800. Ten of the 12 golfers on the U.S. team are ahead of Im in the overall top scorer odds — only Billy Horschel (+2800) and Kevin Kisner (+6600) have longer odds than Im.

Collin Morikawa is at +250 to be the top scorer among the six captain’s picks on the U.S. team while Si Woo Kim is at +300 to lead the six captain’s picks from the International team.
