Golden Sun And Its Sequel Are Finally Coming To Switch

Nintendo Switch Golden Sun NSO

A couple weeks ago, I wrote an open letter to Nintendo asking where Golden Sun was. The company had promised to bring the Game Boy Advance game to its Nintendo Switch Online service almost a year ago, but we’d had radio silence ever since. Now, Nintendo has finally delivered on its promise.

Nintendo announced today that it was finally bringing Golden Sun to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack owners. Not only that, but it’s not just Golden Sun coming — Golden Sun: The Lost Age, the sequel to the first game, is also headed to Switch on the same day: January 17, 2023.

Nintendo said that the games will support both online multiplayer – a feature often forgotten about in Golden Sun – and the transfer of save data from the first game to the second. This can be done through two methods, a password or via virtual link cable, though unfortunately it seems like there isn’t an easy way to transfer your data on a single system.

While at least one game in Japan has a boutique system for single-system save transfer on Nintendo Switch Online, games like The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Seasons weren’t so lucky. Golden Sun’s password system will certainly do the trick nonetheless, but depending on how much data you want to transfer, those passwords can be over 200 characters long.

So why are people so excited for Golden Sun? It’s a little hard to explain, honestly, but the gist of it is that both games are incredible JRPGs that are very tightly polished and have a bunch of really fresh ideas. Honestly, looking at the trailers now, the art style hasn’t aged super gracefully, but the combat systems and exploration mechanics are still going to be some of the best in the business.

On a more personal note, these are some of my favorite games of all time, and I’m more than willing to accept the credit for Nintendo finally getting off its rear and pushing these games to Switch. You’re welcome, everyone, we finally did it.
