Golden Globes to return to TV in 2023 after going dark amid scandals
The Golden Globes aren’t canceled after all.
The annual TV and movie awards show, which was demoted to a tiny in-person event with no broadcast or livestream this year in light of a run of controversies, will return to NBC next year, the network announced Tuesday.
NBC said last year that it wouldn’t air the Globes in 2022, a punishment for Los Angeles Times exposés that revealed that the 87-member voting body of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had no Black members and that its reporters were prone to “ethical lapses,” including a swanky press trip to the set of “Emily in Paris” ahead of a surprise nomination for the Netflix series.
“We recognize the HFPA’s commitment to ongoing change and look forward to welcoming back the Golden Globes to NBC for its landmark 80th anniversary in January 2023,” Frances Berwick, chairman of entertainment networks for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, said Tuesday.

The ceremony will air live coast-to-coast on NBC and Peacock on Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. ET.
After NBC announced it wouldn’t air the awards show this year, the HFPA has since introduced 103 new voters to its ranks. The total voting body now represents 62 different countries and is 52% female and 51.5% racially and ethnically diverse, NBC said Tuesday.
A spokesman for the network would not disclose any financial information to the Daily News, including whether NBC is paying the full $60 million license fee.
In a joint statement, NBC and the HFPA, a nonprofit collective of entertainment journalists, said the arrangement was a one-year deal.
“It’s great to be back at the Beverly Hilton for the must-see celebration recognizing the best in film and television,” HFPA President Helen Hoehne said in a statement. “The HFPA remains committed to important changes and supporting programs which prioritize diversity, inclusion and transparency.”
The 2022 ceremony was not even livestreamed and no talent attended.
The Golden Globes were last shown on TV in 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic led to a bi-coastal ceremony, with Tina Fey co-hosting from New York and Amy Poehler holding down the fort in Beverly Hills.
