A fundraiser to honor a 10-year-old boy who died in his Apex neighborhood on Memorial Day began raising money this week to support a yet to be named children’s charity.

Ayaan Vachery was riding his scooter in the Woodall Estates community around 1 p.m. Monday when police say he he was hit by a car near his home.

The cause of the collision is still being determined.

On Tuesday, a GoFundMe was created to raise money for a children’s charity to honor Ayaan. By Wednesday afternoon it was already closing in on its initial $7,000 goal.

The page was set up by Carissa Haney who wrote that Ayaan was a “beloved member of the community.”

“All of our children knew and loved him,” she wrote. Monica and Shibu Vachery, the boy’s parents, will donate the money to a charity of their choice.

Ayaan was a fourth-grade student at Combs Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh. Principal Juley Sexton wrote a letter to parents on Monday evening, sharing the news with them.

“Our condolences, thoughts, and prayers go out to his family and his friends. Please keep them and all of those that have been impacted by this loss in your hearts and prayers,” Sexton said. “We want to honor Ayaan’s family and be respectful of their needs of privacy at this time.”

Sexton said the school’s student services team would be available all week to support any students who need help navigating the loss.

What we know about the crash

The name of the driver who hit Ayaan has not been released, and Apex police have not said if any charges will be filed.

The speed limit in the Woodall Estates is 25 mph, and police said they had not received any complaints about speed or traffic in the neighborhood.

Mayor Jacques Gilbert told residents in a statement that concerns about traffic are being researched.

Neighbors told ABC11 they plan to share their concerns at the June 13 Apex Town Council meeting.
