Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s New Trailer Is Amazing

We’re in a golden age of Godzilla, with two separate but equally fantastic approaches to the King of the Monsters running concurrently. Toho’s recent Godzilla films have been somber, reflective films where Godzilla is often (but not always) seen as a retribution for the harms of man. Legendary’s approach, on the other hand, focuses more on the spectacle, and the new trailer for Godzilla x Kong certainly brings a lot of that.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment released a new trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire yesterday – the fifth film in the MonsterVerse franchise – and it’s absolutely incredible. The trailer runs for about three minutes, and shows Godzilla and King Kong reluctantly teaming up to take on an empire of great apes, much like Kong.

The trailer opens on some establishing shots of Godzilla and Kong in their native habitats, before pivoting to some shots of humans that are much less interesting. One human, whose name is unimportant because this is a monster movie, says that there’s “a signal” that Godzilla and Kong can feel, and it’s calling to them, telling them some kind of danger is coming.

The humans create a strange vortex in the ocean, and plunge into it to find themselves in a world of great apes. Kong tries fighting against them himself, but unfortunately it’s proving to be a lot to deal with all by himself. That’s where Godzilla comes in, and despite some initial bickering, the two are seen joining forces to beat up some other apes.

We also get to see Kong’s new mechanical glove, which seems to give him super punching powers. Did a huge, powerful gorilla need a super-powered mecha gauntlet? Probably not. But this is all about the spectacle, so hey, why not?

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will open in theaters on March 29, 2024.
