Godzilla Minus One has set another box office record, as it continues its rampage on the big screen.

The hugely-acclaimed film, which deals with Japan's post-war economic and political collapse while also having a giant monster wreaking havoc, has made over $50 million at the US box office.

As reported in The Hollywood Reporter, this means that Godzilla Minus One is the highest-grossing Japanese-language film in North America. It is also the fifth-highest grossing foreign-language film in the territory, not adjusted for inflation.

In terms of overall box office, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train remains the highest grossing Japanese movie by far.

The Mean Girls musical topped the box office over the weekend, while Jason Statham's action film The Beekeeper debuted in second place. Wonka followed in third place, crossing the $500 million mark and becoming one of the biggest musicals at the box office in the process.

The success of Godzilla Minus One is being built on in Japan, as distributor Toho has re-released it in Japanese cinemas in black and white, which director Takashi Yamazaki explained was a lengthy process that saw the team go shot-by-shot to achieve an almost documentary-like look.

Despite the series reaching new heights in the West, producer Minami Ichikawa has stated that they don't intend to rush out a follow-up.

"Good films are all about quality," he said. "We want great ideas, an excellent script, a talented director, and the right cast to work on it carefully. Godzilla deserves to have that level of intentionality."

Godzilla Minus One is still playing in cinemas now.
