Godzilla Has Finally Given Me A Reason To Play Dave The Diver

PlayStation held its first State of Play of the year last night, with over a dozen games for the PS5 (and PSVR2, but we don’t talk about that) featured in the show. One of those games was Dave the Diver, which is finally coming to PlayStation after having been released on Nintendo Switch and PC last year. That’s not the best part, though, as brand-new Godzilla DLC is coming to the game, too.

For those who aren’t in the know, Dave the Diver is a small-budget (but not indie) game from Mintrocket, a subsidiary of Korean media conglomerate Nexon. It’s a curious little adventure game where you play as Dave, a diver and sushi restaurateur, collecting fish under the ocean and then serving it to customers in the restaurant.

From what I hear, it’s a wonderful game, and the reviews definitely back that up. Its PC version settled on a 90/100 score on review score aggregator Metacritic, with its Switch version just barely behind on 88/100 — a critical success, if there ever was one.

On a personal level, I’ve had friends and colleagues telling me to play it for months, basically from the moment it was released on PC back in June 2023. Those same friends and colleagues repeated these urges in October, when it launched on Switch. And yet, despite the good reviews and solid recommendations, I just couldn’t find the time or energy to play it. Enter Godzilla.

It makes complete sense that somebody who spends all their time diving into the ocean to look for interesting fish and other delights would someday come across Godzilla, given he tends to hang out in the ocean quite a lot. And how very exciting that must be, to be on the hunt for the next fish to sashimi and to see out of the corner of your eye the one and only King of the Monsters.

Look at him go.
Mintrocket

Godzilla in Dave the Diver, at least from what we’ve seen so far, is suitably massive and menacing, even lighting up in a rage, about to fire off a nuclear blast. It’s everything a Godzilla cameo should be, and it’s absolutely wonderful. We don’t even know anything else about the DLC yet, other than the fact that it’s free and Godzilla is in it, but I’ve already downloaded the demo on Switch and I plan on buying it as soon as I can be bothered to update my payment info on my Switch account.

Because that’s what Godzilla deserves — completely uncritical and unwavering devotion. The millions of people that made Godzilla Minus One a record-breaking success knew this, and just think: you might not think Godzilla is real, but if he is, wouldn’t you want to be on his good side? I know I would.

Dave the Diver is set to be released on PS5 in April 2024, with the free Godzilla DLC coming a month after, in May 2024.
