Goddard boys soccer wins first regional title since 2014 in Kansas high school playoffs

A handful of Wichita-area boys soccer teams claimed regional championships on Thursday, while also advancing to the state quarterfinals in the Kansas high school playoffs.

Perhaps the most notable winner from Tuesday’s action was Goddard, which prevailed with a 2-0 road victory at Andover Central to earn the program’s first regional title since 2014. The Lions had just lost 4-3 in overtime to Andover Central in last week’s regular-season finale, as they improved to 13-5 and will travel to Newton (16-2) for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday for a spot in the Class 5A semifinals on the line.

Maize South (18-0) kept its perfect season alive behind a 5-goal performance from Vitor Geromel, who now has a school-record 40 goals this season, in a 6-1 victory over Kapaun Mt. Carmel. The Mavericks will try to return to state at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday against Andover (10-6-2), which pulled a seed upset over Emporia with a 3-0 road win on Thursday. Newton came away with a 3-2 win in overtime over Maize in the other area Class 5A matchup.

The City League saw all three of its remaining teams bow out in 6A regional title games, as North lost 2-0 at Dodge City, Northwest fell 5-1 at Washburn Rural and East dropped a 2-0 match to Lawrence Free State at home. Derby (14-4) was the lone area team to punch its ticket to the quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over Garden City to set up a quarterfinal showdown at Washburn Rural (15-3) on Tuesday.

There were also plenty of seed upsets in the area’s Class 4-1A regional finals, as three road teams won in McPherson (3-2 overtime win at Augusta), Classical (3-0 win at Independence) and Trinity Academy (3-1 win at Rose Hill). Meanwhile, Buhler improved to 17-1 on the season by prevailing with a 3-2 win in overtime over Topeka Hayden. Buhler will host McPherson, while Classical will play Trinity at Stryker on Tuesday.
