‘God’s Own Country’ director urges viewers to ‘not rent or buy’ it from Amazon Prime after gay love scenes apparently censored

British film director Francis Lee is urging viewers in the U.S. to boycott his 2017 award-winning debut, “God’s Own Country,” on Amazon Prime, after learning that some gay love scenes appeared to have been censored by the streaming service.

“Dear friends in USA, God’s Own Country appears to have been censored on Amazon Prime. Until this is investigated please do not rent or buy on Amazon Prime. It is not the film I intended or made,” he tweeted late Tuesday.

A representative for the company told the Daily News that “Amazon Prime Video did not censor the movie. The edited version was uploaded by the provider, Samuel Goldwyn Films.”

The critically acclaimed drama follows the story of a young sheep farmer in northern England who develops a strong bond with a Romanian migrant worker who finds temporary work at his farm.

The intense relationship the two men share helps him see life in an unexpected way, as it awakens some of his most primal instincts.

The film went on to collect a number of prestigious awards for acting, directing and screenwriting, including the World Cinema Directing Award at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, and the Männer Jury Award at the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival.

It was also nominated for Outstanding British Film of the Year at the 2018 BAFTA Film Awards.

On Wednesday morning, Lee followed up with a tweet asking viewers in the U.S. “if any of you have evidence of @PrimeVideo (Amazon Prime USA) censoring naked women or intimate/sex scenes within heterosexual stories on their streaming service? Or if they just censor queer stories?”

Some viewers pointed out that only the version of the movie that streams for free for Amazon Prime members has been censored. The version available for purchase remains unedited.
