GMC Sierra EV Denali pickup packs 754 hp, 400-mile range

The Chevrolet Silverado EV pickup is now joined by its electrified twin in the General Motors (GM) family with the new GMC Sierra EV.

The Sierra EV has the same chassis, powertrain, and Ultium batteries as the Silverado EV, but design-wise looks more like a traditional pickup, whereas the Silverado EV appears more like a lifestyle, adventure pickup. The traditional styling may appeal to a broader group of buyers, including those looking for work trucks.

The high-trim model GMC unveiled last night is the 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, which will have 400 miles of estimated range, a dual-motor setup with 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque, and an 800-volt architecture that can handle 350 kW DC fast charging.

GMC, which sells a range of SUVs, CUVs, and pickups that usually have a corresponding Chevrolet model in tow, is actually the first GM brand with an EV pickup and SUV on sale right now with the Hummer EVs. And since there are no corresponding Chevrolet “Hummer” twins if you will, GMC will soon have three EV trucks on offer.

“The 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 is just the beginning,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC, in a statement. “It will offer customers our very latest in technology, capability and luxury delivered in a way only GMC can do — with much more to come. From the HUMMER EV supertruck to the first-ever Sierra EV, GMC continues to write the next chapter in its future as a premium truck and SUV brand.”

In addition, the Sierra EV pickups will have Onboard Power Station Pro capability, which turns the Sierra EV Denali into a mobile power source, with up to 10.2kW of off-board power to use to power a job site or campsite. The Sierra EV will also be able to provide V to G (vehicle to grid) and V to H (vehicle to home) capabilities through the automaker’s new GM Energy solutions, where the truck can be used to power a home when need be or provide energy from the truck’s battery to the grid.

Though the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 will come with a fairly high price tag of $107,000 at launch, GMC is offering lower trim models like the AT4 and Elevation models, that will have surprising price point, one that can go head to head with Ford’s Lightning Pro (F) base model.

“The $50k model for the Sierra EV is the Elevation trim,” says Nichole Kraatz, GMC Sierra EV chief engineer to Yahoo Finance. “It’s not a ‘work truck’ from the standpoint of a model named a work truck or a fleet truck, if you will, but we’re bringing some really compelling capability from a basic perspective on the Sierra EV into all price points.”

Kraatz says the Sierra EV Denali is a fully loaded model with every conceivable option GMC has in mind, and eventually the lower trim Sierra EVs will then be offered some of the features of the Denali trim as options, in addition to different battery packs for range.

GMC has not revealed what the specs will be for the lower trim Sierra EVs, but it is assumed to be less power and range compared to the Sierra EV Denali. For comparison, the Ford (F) F-150 Lightning Pro base model has 426 hp and 240 miles of range from its standard battery setup.

The 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 will be available at launch in early 2024. GMC says it will introduce the Sierra EV AT4 and Elevation trims in the 2025 model year.
