GM recalls over 200,000 vehicles to fix leak that can stop travel, possibly lead to fire

General Motors is recalling more than 217,000 cars and SUVs to fix an issue that can cause those vehicles to lose power while moving or possibly catch fire.

The problem involves a potential leakage of transmission oil that was detected in vehicles sold in the U.S. and Canada, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall covers the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu; the 2020 Cadillac XT6; the 2018 and 2019 Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Cruze; and the 2019 to 2020 Buick Encore and Enclave, the Cadillac XT4, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Blazer.

Certain versions of the 2018 through 2020 Chevrolet Equinox and Traverse as well as the GMC Terrain are also included.

The Michigan-based auto giant said two bolts may be missing from those vehicles' stop-start mechanism, potentially allowing the fluid to leak, the filings show.

No fires, crashes or injuries have been blamed on the issue so far.

The news comes just days after Volkswagen issued its own recall of more than 200,000 vehicles. That problem involves bolts in some 2016 through 2018 Jettas that may become looser, possibly causing a fuel leak that can lead to fires and crashes.

GM’s latest recall is set to begin on Dec. 14.
