Glenn girls track freshman Lydia Goodsell proves she's the real deal at Kokomo Regional

John Glenn freshman Lydia Goodsell proved she’s the real deal during Tuesday’s IHSAA girls track regional at Kokomo.

The Falcon sprint sensation won the 200-meter dash in 25.90 seconds, while also taking second in the 100, clocking 12.85. And a monster 18 foot, 4 inch effort in the long jump earned yet another second place finish.

Goodsell, who pushed Glenn to seventh in the final team standings by herself, now advances to the IHSAA state finals at Indiana University’s track in Bloomington on Friday, May 31.

Glenn freshman Lydia Goodsell, right, and Washington senior Terryah Leonard sprint to the finish line in the 100-meter dash race at the girls track and field sectional Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at Saint Joseph High School in South Bend. Goodsell would win by 0.13 seconds.

The top three finishers in each event advance to state, as well as any athlete who meets a tough state qualifying standard.

The standards are indeed tough, as athletes qualified for state by using the IHSAA standard in only one event, the discus.

Warsaw claimed its first regional team title since 2018, snapping Culver Academies‘ string after three straight. The Tigers scored 81 points to pull away from Penn, second with 57. Washington was third at 36.

Distance ace Josefina Rastrelli led Warsaw, winning both the 1600 and 800-meter runs.

Washington sophomore Adriana Swanson repeated as champion — no surprise there — in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdle events, clocking 15.66 and 46.71 seconds, respectively.

Penn claimed one champion, the 4 x 800-meter relay of Arianna Balinnang, Aubrey Morgan, Jenavieve Nash and Janine Mbianda. The Kingsmen clocked 9:47.26 to hold off Adams by just over two seconds.

Riley’s 4 x 100 relay of Samara Ford, Keyeira Burton, Abby Wittrock and Karis Johnson finished first in 49.57. The Wildcats were the only team to break the 50-second barrier.

Goshen’s Kristina Petkova turned in one of the most impressive efforts on the evening, clocking 56.40 seconds to win the 400-meter dash.

Emma Yoder of Wawasee uncorked the discus 142-9 to turn back Elkhart’s Ava Decker (132-9).

Portage girls track regional

La Porte senior Ava Penziol cleared 10 feet, 3 inches to win the pole vault at the Portage girls track regional.

She was also the only local athlete to earn a ticket to the IHSAA state finals on Friday, May 31.

With gusty winds swirling throughout Tuesday’s meet, Penziol was the only pole vaulter to make it over 10-3. Second place Sophia Venit of Valparaiso cleared 10-0.

Valparaiso ran away with the girls regional team title, scoring 120 points to far outdistance Lake Central’s 77.

With 14 points, La Porte was 13th in the final team standings. New Prairie scored one point.

LaPorte’s 4 x 800 relay of Caitlyn Carnes, Madalyn Kreamer, Margaret Conner and Faith Spain finished fifth in 10:01.29. New Prairie’s Maci Ernsperger was eighth in the 100-meter dash, clocking a windy 12.67 seconds.
