  • Glenn Close shared a bare-faced selfie that revealed bruising across her cheeks.

  • “Ignore the bruises,” she wrote. “I had a tiny break in my nose fixed.”

  • She didn’t let the injury stop her from posting silly selfies or celebrating her 77th birthday.

In a sea of flawless red carpet glamour, the occasional nugget of celebrity realness is always welcome, and this week, said breath of fresh air was delivered in the form of a bare-faced Glenn Close selfie. The 77-year-old snapped some silly faces that featured discoloration across her cheeks, evidence of a nose break. “Ignore the bruises,” she wrote. “I had a tiny break in my nose fixed.”

She didn’t share how she got the injury, but thankfully, it doesn’t seem to have affected her ability to emote. In one snap, she wore tousled hair and a shocked expression, in another, she playfully stuck out her tongue, and in another, she scrunched up her eyes, nose, and mouth. “I think this is going to be a particularly GOOD day,” she continued. “Feeling as beautiful as ever.”

Fans adored the candid post. “I could not love you more!” one person commented. “Thank you for making a sh*tty day better😂,” another added. “Amazing woman ❤️🙌,” someone else wrote.

Shortly after posting the photos, Close celebrated her 77th birthday, and shared behind-the-scenes clips of the disastrous making of her own birthday cake. (Her Instagram name is The Real Glenn Close for a reason.) In those videos, she appeared to be less bruised, though makeup could have helped cover them. It’s unclear what kind of procedure Close underwent, but according to Mayo Clinic, depending on how a broken nose is repaired, recovery from a correction can take up to two weeks.

In a video wrapping up her 77th birthday celebrations, Close thanked fans and friends for all of the birthday wishes—from bed, wearing a Frownie wrinkle patch, no less. “It really touched me to hear from all of my wonderful friends,” she said. “So, onward. Goodnight.”

Close’s approaches to both aging and selfies are ones we aspire for. “I’ve always felt that my body is not really who I am. We have this house, if you will, that we look out of during our whole life, and it’s not who you are,” she told Glamour in 2022. “It’s actually fascinating to me, because as our house ages, we should get more and more interesting and interested. And yet you have this facade that people see.”

A true Earth angel, she is. Happy birthday, and get well soon, Glenn!
