Glee documentary promises to unpack show scandalsFOX

A new Discovery+ documentary will unveil the behind-the-scenes scandals and tragedies of feel-good musical show Glee.

Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, the series ran for six seasons between 2009 and 2015. Glee catapulted its young cast into TV stardom as well as providing many iconic musical numbers and one-liners, but its legacy has been somewhat marred by rumoured feuds.

The documentary will dive into those as well as the aftermath of the deaths of three of its core cast members: Cory Monteith (Finn Hudson), Mark Salling (Noah Puckerman) and Naya Rivera (Santana Lopez).

"Glee was a once-in-a-generation cultural phenomenon that bravely pushed up against social norms and generated groundbreaking discussions around sexuality, race, disability and family," Warner Bros. Discovery's President of Crime and Investigative Content, Linear and Streaming Jason Sarlanis said in a statement.

"Each music-filled week brought joy to so many people, but sadly, even one of the happiest shows on television couldn't escape the dark underbelly of Hollywood and the frenzy of burgeoning social media.

"While celebrating the show's indelible mark on pop culture and its unprecedented success, The Price of Glee takes a hard look at the intense pressure that results from being catapulted into superstardom and sheds new light on the terrible tragedies that befell the cast and crew of Glee."

In a recent interview, Murphy looked back on the show, admitting that it should have ended after Monteith's death.

Glee honoured the late actor with an episode titled 'The Quarterback', which the series creator now thinks was done too soon.

"I would be like: 'That’s the end'. Because you can't really recover from something like that. It wasn't, like, a normal death where someone is sick, and you can see them. It happened so quickly with no warning," Murphy told TVLine in November.

The Price of Glee will be available to stream on Discovery+ in the UK from January 16, 2023. Glee is available to stream via Disney+ in the UK.
