Girls tennis roundup: Portsmouth, Oyster River, Winnacunnet, Exeter all advance to semis

PORTSMOUTH - The Portsmouth High School girls tennis team punched its ticket to the Division II semifinals thanks to a 7-2 quarterfinal win over No. 5 Hollis-Brookline on Thursday.

The fourth-seeded Clippers will face No. 1 seed and defending state champion Oyster River Monday.

“I’m very happy we were able to beat a tough Hollis-Brookline squad and make it to the Final Four," Portsmouth head coach Wendy Poutre said. "(Hollis-Brookline) is well-coached and athletic. The matches were well-fought and competitive. We look forward to competing against the top team in Division II in the semifinals. “

On Thursday, the Clippers swept doubles and won four of six matches in singles.

In singles, Sophia Jundi won 8-2 at No. 1, Avery Porter won 8-4 at No. 2, Clara Daw won 8-1 at No. 4, and Lindsay Lee won 8-2 at No. 5.

In doubles, Jundi and Porter won 8-3 at No. 1, Elyse White and Daw won 8-6 at No. 2, and Lee and Maeva Honda won 8-2 at No. 3.

DIVISION II

DURHAM - The defending Division II state champions took their first step to reaching the championship match for the second straight year with this quarterfinal win.

The top-seeded Bobcats will face No. 4 Portsmouth on Monday in a semifinal match.

"I'm so proud of the girls for keeping amazing focus amidst the warm weather conditions and various springtime school activities," Oyster River head coach Lynne Corson said.

Sofie Gibson (No. 1, 8-2), Clea Gibson (No. 2, 8-3), Kathryn Demarest (No. 3, 8-1), Sofia Karageorgos (No. 4, 8-3), Siena Schaier (No. 5, 8-0) and Jessica Li (No. 6, 8-1) all won in singles for the Bobcats.

In doubles, Clea Gibson and Li won 8-1 at No. 1, and Demarest and Karageorgos won 8-0 at No. 2.

No. 3 Winnacunnet 7

No. 6 Windham 2

HAMPTON - Stella Sebeny (No. 1, 8-0), Mia Botnick (No. 2, 8-0), Ava Sebeny (No. 4, 8-0) and Amelia Shannon (No. 5, 8-4) all won in singles action at No. 3 Winnacunnet advanced with this Division II quarterfinal win.

Winnacunnet will visit No. 2 Souhegan on Monday. Souhegan advanced with a 7-2 win over No. 7 Keene.

In doubles, Stella Sebeny and Botnick won 8-0 at No. 1, Amelia Dumont and Ava Sebeny won 8-2 at No. 2, and Shannon and Grace Bramhall won 8-6 at No. 3.

DIVISION I

No. 4 Exeter 5

No. 5 Hanover 4

EXETER - Katie Rocha and Ava Iacabucci won a pivotal match at No. 1 doubles, 8-4 as No. 4 Exeter advanced to the Division I semifinals.

Exeter will visit top-seed Pinkerton Academy on Monday in a semifinal match.

The Blue Hawks won four matches in singles as Rocha won 8-2 at No. 1, Iacobucci won 8-6 at No. 2, Lydia Goldrick won 8-4 at No. 4, and Cate Phelps won 8-6 at No. 6.

DIVISION III

No. 5 Gilford 5

No. 4 St. Thomas Aquinas 4

DOVER - The fourth-seeded Saints saw their season come to an end with this Division III quarterfinal loss.
