Doctors Charter in Miami Shores was second to host Lemon Bay at the FHSAA Region 4-1A Girls’ Weightlifting Championships in Englewood.

AIE Charter of Miami and Coral Shores tied for ninth.

Hannah St. Gerard of Doctors Charter at 119 pounds, Kayla Behrazer of Doctors Charter at 129 pounds and Emma Van Arman of AIE Charter at 139 pounds won region titles.

Girls’ weightlifting is FHSAA sanctioned. They compete by weight. There are two divisions -- Olympic and Traditional. Each consists of two lifts. The combined weights are used for scoring.

Individual regional champions automatically advance to state. The next 16 are from all regions ranked by total weight lifted.

The FHSAA State Girls’ Weightlifting Championships are Feb. 18 at RP Funding Center in Lakeland.

Double firsts

True North Classical Academy celebrated a good Friday last week.

The True North boys’ basketball team won consecutive district titles.

The Titans boys’ basketball team made school history by winning its second consecutive district title, while the girls’ soccer team also notched a first, winning a region semifinal by beating Glades Day-Belle Glade 6-1.

To follow-up, True North girls’ soccer (14-3) continued making news by beating South Florida HEAT 4-2 on Tuesday for the region championship. It’s the Titans first region title and state semifinal appearance for girls’ soccer.

True North (23-5) plays Atlantic Christian (18-4) in a region quarterfinal on Thursday. Miami Christian (15-10) faces Jupiter Christian (21-3).

Montes 2,000

Palmer Trinity senior Emily Montes reached the 2,000-point milestone in her high school varsity career. She scored 12 points against Somerset Academy-North Lauderdale to eclipse the mark. It was a Region 4-3A quarterfinal which Somerset won 50-45.

Montes played seven seasons of varsity basketball, totaling 2,010 points. She will continue her basketball endeavors at Columbia University in the Ivy League.

Water polo

The Ransom Everglades girls’ water polo team placed second at the Forza Stefano Tournament in Pembroke Pines. The Raiders went 3-1. The boys’ team also was 3-1.

Maccabi Games

The David Posnack JCC (DPJCC) in Davie hosts the 2023 JCC Maccabi Games & Access, North America’s largest Olympic-style competition for Jewish teens, concluding Wednesday.

The JCC Association has proudly added JCC Maccabi Access, a JCC Maccabi Games experience for athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to its signature JCC Maccabi program family. The four-day event ends Wednesday.
