Girls Lacrosse: Section 4 titles for Corning, Ithaca, U-E and Windsor

Repeat champions Corning and Ithaca joined Union-Endicott and Windsor in capturing Section 4 titles in girls lacrosse Wednesday night across four venues.

Class A: Corning 13, Elmira 5

Gracee Work and Kyra Gross scored three goals apiece as Corning led 7-1 at halftime in a victory over Elmira in the Class A final at Corning Memorial Stadium to secure a third consecutive sectional title. The game was called with 1:47 remaining because of lightning after starting about 80 minutes late because of storms in the area.

Katerina Strong added two goals and an assist for the Hawks. Lindsay Casterline, Makenna Morse and Paige Stansfield each had a goal and an assist.

"We’ve always worked together and it’s so nice to finally come together and get a championship for sectionals," Work said.

"We really played as a team tonight and I really enjoyed that. We’ve just been working on working together and I think it’s awesome to see it all come together in this game."

Laila Burchard and Catherine Koski had two goals each for Elmira.

The title came in the first season back as head coach for Kim McNaney, who guided Corning East to 14 sectional championships and Corning's combined team to three in four seasons before stepping down after the 2014 season.

She liked the way Corning shared the ball Wednesday and played defense.

"We’ve had our ups and downs this year," McNaney said. "They’ve worked really hard and they’ve gotten a lot better as the season has progressed. We’ve had some really challenging games, but to do well in sectional finals is good to see."
