Gigi Hadid Puts a Moody Spin on the Naked Dress at the 2023 Met Gala

Gigi Hadid is championing the naked dress trend at the 2023 Met Gala—but, with a moody twist.

The supermodel stepped onto the Metropolitan Museum of Art's coveted staircase—where attendees are honoring late designer Karl Lagerfeld with this year's dress code—while wearing an edgy all-black and completely sheer dress, custom-made by Givenchy. The gown included transparent black fabric draped over one of Hadid's shoulders, extending out into a dramatically long train, plus a strapless bustier underneath. The see-through skirt featured hip cutouts and a ruched center.

To cap off the standout look, Hadid wore black pumps, a pearl and diamond choker, and pearl stud earrings.

Hadid is a veteran of the Met Gala's carpeted steps.

She attended last year's event in a statement-making burgundy ensemble from Versace. The outfit was comprised of a glossy cherry red catsuit cinched at the waist with a matching corset. She layered with a shiny, voluminous puffer coat awash in a matching maroon hue. A pair of red pumps, a bejeweled red necklace, and a bright red lip finished off the look.

Prior to that, the Guest in Residence founder channeled Old Hollywood at the 2021 Met Gala, where she wore a strapless white Prada gown paired with black leather opera gloves and crystal bejeweled pumps. At the time, she had dyed her usual blonde hair to a fiery shade of red, which she wore up in a retro-inspired ponytail.

For Harper's BAZAAR's August 2021 cover story, Hadid opened up about embodying the essence of the clothes she wears as a model.

"The point is not to be distracted by yourself or even look at yourself in the mirror. It’s about being able to look at the camera, and then, kind of in your out-of-focus vision, is the shape of you," she said. "It’s training a model to understand how she fits into the photo, which is why I became a model. Obviously, I’m not saying this as anything disrespectful against women, but you have to look at yourself like an object or a fashion object or a sculpture."
