Georgia teacher faces backlash after Breonna Taylor comments

A high school teacher in Georgia faced backlash after a viral video appeared to show her blaming Breonna Taylor for her death in Louisville last year.

Susan McCoy, who teaches forensics and environmental science at Pebblebrook High School in suburban Atlanta, said, “I’m sorry she was killed, but you know when you hang out with people with guns and shooting, you’re likely to get caught in the crossfire,” the Louisville Courier Journal reported Saturday.

Taylor, a Black emergency room worker, died at 26 after she was shot in her apartment by cops during a March 13 raid. The shooting catalyzed racial justice protests in Louisville and across the U.S.

During the raid, Taylor’s boyfriend fired a gunshot. The boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, later said he thought intruders were breaking in. The police fired, and Taylor was struck by five bullets.

McCoy falsely said in the video that Taylor was spending time with a man wanted on charges, according to the Courier Journal.

McCoy didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily News on Sunday afternoon, nor did the school’s principal, Dr. Dana Giles.

But in an apology video that was tweeted by journalist David Dennis Jr., McCoy said, “I’m just heartbroken that I said something so rude and disrespectful.”

Pebblebrook High School is located in Mableton, Ga.
