The NWS has also expected rainfall between 1.5 and 3 inches, with an elevated risk of flash flooding in Columbus and Middle Georgia areas.

High wind safety tips

A high wind warning is in effect for some Middle Georgia cities. The NWS reported that “damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.”

Here’s how to stay safe:

  • Avoid being outdoors, especially in wooded areas. If you are outside when a windstorm occurs, watch for flying debris and stay away from roadways or train tracks.

  • If you are inside, be cautious of windows and try to stay on a low level of the home.

  • If you’re driving: slow down, stay focused and keep both hands on the wheel. It is crucial to watch for debris and keep a safe distance from other vehicles. If the windstorm becomes too strong, pull over and secure yourself inside the vehicle, but don’t get out.

  • Please note that high-profile vehicles are at risk of flipping or being pushed around by high winds.

  • If you come across a downed power line, report it to your local utility company or to the police. Do not approach the line or touch nearby debris.

If you experience a power outage during Tropical Storm Nicole, you can report it to Georgia Power’s Outage and Storm Center or call 1-888-891-0938.
