George W. Bush: Queen Elizabeth II was ‘a woman of great intellect, charm, and wit’

Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland at age 96, after a 70-year reign.

Queen Elizabeth II’s reign spanned 14 presidential administrations, and she visited the White House six times from 1951 to 2007. Her visit to the Lone Star State in 1991 captured the hearts of Texans.

Here’s how former presidents reacted to the Queen’s death.

George W. Bush

President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip when she last visited the U.S. and the White House in 2007. The visit celebrated the 400th anniversary of the English settlement of Jamestown, Virginia. On May 7, 2007, the royal couple attended an elegant white-tie State Dinner hosted in their honor. President Bush invited that year’s winning Kentucky Derby jockey Calvin Borel, as the Queen was a renowned racing fan, and owned and bred racehorses. During her stay, she also visited the World War II Memorial with President Bush and his father, former President George H.W. Bush—a World War II veteran.

“Laura and I were honored to have known Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She was a woman of great intellect, charm, and wit. Spending time at Buckingham Palace, and having tea with Her Majesty – and her Corgis – is among our fondest memories of the presidency,” Bush said in a statement from Dallas. “Queen Elizabeth ably led England through dark moments with her confidence in her people and her vision for a brighter tomorrow. Our world benefitted from her steady resolve, and we are grateful for her decades of service as sovereign. Americans in particular appreciate her strong and steadfast friendship. Laura and I join our fellow citizens in sending our heartfelt condolences to the Royal family and the British people.”
