Gensler scores 31 in Winnebago Lutheran boys basketball victory, eclipses 1000 career points

Here is a look at Thursday's high school sports action in the area.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Winnebago Lutheran 79, New Holstein 69

NEW HOLSTEIN - After trailing by five at the break, the Vikings (11-5, 8-1 Flyway) stepped their defense up by limiting the Huskies (3-15, 1-8 Eastern Wisconsin) to just 21 second-half points to win by double-digits in a non-conference contest.

Noah Gensler became the seventh player in WLA history to join the 1,000-career points club, leading the Vikings with a game-high 31. Gensler also grabbed 16 rebounds for a double-double.

Gannan Schwartz added 19 points with six assists and Sam Loehr, who last Friday became WLA's all-time career leader in three-pointers (197), had 15 points - including 4-of-9 makes from behind the arc.

Keaton Wagner led New Holstein with 22 points. Trent Roehrig and Abe Smith each followed with 11 for the Huskies.

Lomira 70, Marshall 68

MARSHALL - The Lions (10-6, 7-2 Flyway) defeated the Cardinals (8-8, 1-2 Capitol-South) in a non-conference battle.

Jake Broeske led Lomira with 19 points, including 14 in the second half, and Jackson Goebel followed with 18. Logan Menzer added 13 points and Connor Steers rounded out the scoring leaders for the Lions with 10.

Kenyon Miggins scored a game-high 22 points to lead Marshall and Daniel Nickel finished with 19 for the Cardinals.

Oakfield 57, Central Wisconsin Christian 46

WAUPUN - The Oaks (9-4, 6-2 Trailways-East) defeated the Crusaders (7-7, 4-3) to pick up a conference road victory.

Mitchell Moser and David Dercks each scored 14 points to lead Oakfield. Bo Bijl added 11 for the Oaks.

Brock Hoekstrav and Cody Van Herwarden each had 10 points to lead CWC. Isaac Abel followed with nine, all in the second half, for the Crusaders.

No. 2 (D-3) Kiel 77, North Fond du Lac 27

NORTH FOND DU LAC - The Orioles (0-17, 0-9 Flyway) fell to the No. 2-ranked Raiders (16-0, 9-0 Eastern Wisconsin) in a non-conference meeting.

The trio of Cade Voelker, Jack Heckmann and Grant Manz led Kiel with 13 points each. Pierce Arenz chipped in with 11 points for the Raiders.

Stats were unavailable for North Fondy.

Living Word Lutheran 78, Mayville 75

MAYVILLE - The Cardinals (2-13, 2-7 Flyway) fell to the Timberwolves (9-7, 6-3 Midwest Classic) in a non-conference matchup.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 10 (D-5) Oakfield 68, Central Wisconsin Christian 35

WAUPUN - The No. 10-ranked Oaks (15-2, 9-1 Trailways-East) cruised to a conference victory over the Crusaders (6-10, 3-6) behind a very strong defensive effort with great rebounding.

Jorja Hofman scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for a double-double to lead Oakfield. Alexis Leibenow added 14 points and Stella Hofman had 13 with seven boards for the Oaks.

Samantha Braskamp led CWC with 15 points.

Lomira 59, Campbellsport 29

LOMIRA - The Lions (11-8, 6-4 Flyway) pummeled the Cougars (1-15, 0-9) to pick up a conference victory.

Emily Dreikosen led Lomira with 16 points and Savanna Frea followed with a double-double of 13 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Addison Zahn rounded out the Lions' scoring leaders with 10 points, eight boards and four assists.

Lili Twohig scored 11 points to lead Campbellsport.

BOYS HOCKEY

St. Mary's Springs 6, Waukesha 2

FOND DU LAC - The Ledgers (12-8, 5-1 Badgerland) scored twice in each period and shut down all eight of Waukesha's power play opportunities to defeat the Wings (12-6, 6-1 Classic Eight) in a non-conference matchup.

Quinn McLaughlin got the scoring going for Springs at the four-minute mark with a short-handed goal and Austin Westergaard added the first of his three goals for the Ledgers in the opening period.

Westergaard's second goal also came short-handed, and Armani Fisher tacked one on in the following period to give Springs a 4-1 advantage.

Westergaard cashed in on a Ledgers power play to secure the hat track and Fisher netted his second goal of the game in the third period to ice the win for Springs.

Isaac Sabel had three assists for the Ledgers and both Fisher and Westergaard collected two apiece.

Jacob Runge and Owen Frehner each scored a goal for Waukesha. Cole Muchow, Carter Lowe and Frehner all recorded as assist each.

Brendan Gaertig had 15 saves for Springs and Brady Sanger had 25 saves for the Wings.
