Gena Rowlands’ Son Nick Cassavetes Shares Sweet Fan Tributes After Her Death at 94: ‘Rest Easy Gina’
The director reposted a series of Instagram tributes to his late mother, who died on Wednesday, Aug. 14
Gena Rowlands is being remembered by her son Nick Cassavetes following her death at 94.
Rowlands, best known for her roles in A Woman Under the Influence and The Notebook, died surrounded by her family at her Calif. home on Wednesday, Aug. 14, Cassavetes’ agent confirmed to PEOPLE. TMZ was the first outlet to report the news.
Following her death, director Cassavetes reposted a series of sweet tributes to his late mother on his Instagram Stories.
The first post included a photo of Rowlands in the movie Gloria alongside the words, “This picture has graced the walls of every office I’ve ever had! An amazing strong talented woman has left us! Rest easy Gena Rowlands!”

A second post from the same fan featured a black-and-white photo of Rowlands and her late filmmaker husband John Cassavetes — Nick’s father — in their movie Opening Night.
John, with whom Rowlands shared son Nick and daughters Alexandra and Zoe, died in 1989 at the age of 59 from complications of cirrhosis.
“Another great team reunited! RIP Gena Rowlands,” the shared post was captioned.

Rowlands and John worked on 10 films together, including Gloria, Opening Night, A Woman Under the Influence and Minnie and Moskowitz.
Both 1974’s A Woman Under the Influence and 1980’s Gloria saw Rowlands earn a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
Rowlands remarried in 2012 to retired businessman Robert Forrest.

Nick also reposted a Story from producer Dajana Gudic, with whom he worked on 2023 film Impulse, who shared a black-and-white photo of Rowlands in her younger years.
“I never got a chance to meet her, but the way she raised her son, my dear friend @paul_smenus says everything about her. Rest in peace beautiful soul, Gena Rowlands,” Gudic wrote, adding a series of white heart emojis to her caption.
In June, Nick told Entertainment Weekly that his mother had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease five years ago.
The pair worked together on 2004 film The Notebook, with Nick directing his mother in her role as an older Allie, which became one of her best known roles.
