GE HealthCare will move its Wauwatosa and Milwaukee operations to Waukesha − a consolidation affecting around 1,000 employees that leaves a large office building without its only tenant.

The relocations will occur over the next three years, said President and Chief Executive Officer Peter Arduini.

The plans include improvements at the health care equipment maker's 561-acre Waukesha campus to include refreshed workspaces and amenities, collaboration and conferencing technology and a conferencing hub for large meetings, he said in a note to employees.

"The refreshed workspaces, collaboration and focus spaces, shared amenities and other elements are part of a pilot program that will help us determine the future of on-site working," Arduini said.

"The purpose of this is to create an energizing and dynamic workplace that represents our culture,” he said.

GE HealthCare will continue to lease its Wauwatosa office, at 9900 W. Innovation Drive in the Milwaukee County Research Park, through 2026. It will have employees there until then.

The 506,000-square-foot building opened in 2006.

It was sold in 2007 to a Boston-based investors group for $96.5 million. That led building developer Irgens Partners LLC to pay back a $10 million loan made by the City of Wauwatosa to help finance the project.

Also, the city’s $15 million grant to Irgens, which was being repaid through the building’s property taxes, was paid off earlier than expected because of the higher assessed value assigned to the building through the sale.

Also moving to the Waukesha campus are operations at the company's 338,500-square-foot manufacturing facility at 8200 W. Tower Ave., on Milwaukee's northwest side.

Meanwhile, a 40,000-square-foot expansion is planned for GE HealthCare's West Milwaukee manufacturing operation, at 4855 W. Electric Ave.

GE HealthCare in January completed it spinoff from GE.

The Chicago-based company has a presence in more than 160 countries and approximately 51,000 employees worldwide.
