Although gas prices are still much higher than we’ve been used to for decades, it’s been 70 days since Ada County last saw an increase in prices at the pump.

As of Friday morning, the average gas price in Idaho was $4.49 per gallon, six cents lower than last week, according to AAA. But the Gem State still has the seventh-most expensive gas in the nation and is far above the national average of $3.74 per gallon.

Ada County is 10 cents above the state average at $4.59 per gallon.

The lowering of gas prices gave Idahoans a chance for one last hurrah this summer over Labor Day weekend. According to AAA, three of the country’s top-10 Labor Day travel destinations were all within driving distance of Boise: Salt Lake City in Utah, Jackson Hole in Wyoming and Spokane, Washington.

“Gas prices have been steadily dropping since Independence Day, and while they’re still much higher than a year ago, that won’t be enough to deter most people from following through on their Labor Day travel plans,” AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde said in a press release ahead of the weekend.

“It’s clear from the increase in travel bookings that people are willing to spend more,” he continued.

The West Texas Intermediate benchmark, one of three benchmarks in oil pricing worldwide, is trading crude oil near $87 per barrel as of Sept. 6, $5 less than at the start of July yet $19 more than a year ago.

As of Thursday, residents of Nez Perce County in north Idaho were enjoying the cheapest gas in the state at $3.89 per gallon. Meanwhile, Blaine County continues to suffer some of the worst prices in Idaho at $5.02 per gallon.

Blaine County and other central Idaho counties such as Valley and Boise have had to deal with consistently higher prices than the rest of the state since prices hiked in March.
